Every golfer is looking for the fastest way to a better swing, to drive the ball farther, straighter and more accurately.  You search all the magazines, watch self instruction videos or ask our buddy what to do, but you can’t find the answers.  Actually your body holds the answers!

Everyone has a different body type that shapes your golf swing.  Someone who is tight and stiff will have a completely different swing than some who are very flexible.  A fit and muscular person will swing the club with a different style than the guy who is a “weekend warrior.”  With that said, know that there is no ideal body type for golf.  Everyone has golf swing flaws; even the professional golfer.  The sooner you identify these flaws and correct them the faster you will achieve better ball striking and lower scores.

Here are the top 2 most common flaws golfers have:

  1. LOSS OF POSTURE

Here are some posture flaws at the address position:

(Too much arch in low back)             (Neutral)                (Too rounded in upper back)

Posture also fails during the swing.  We sometimes stand up too tall on the backswing and dip down too far on the downswing.  If your torso does not match your address position during your swing you have lost your posture and spine position.  This is when your buddy says “keep your head down” and “You’re bending your knees too much.”

This causes you to change your hand positions in order to try to square up your club face. Unfortunately this causes unpredictable shots.  What you don’t want!

  1. EXTENSION OF THE BODY

This is where the upper body straightens up during the swing, especially during the downswing.  Golfers do this to maintain their balance. Many times the golfer will feel trapped or stuck on the downswing.

This is where you will typically see the hips push forward like in the picture to the right.  Many times you will see hooks and shanks with this fault.

This is where you can start to fix those flaws!

Correction of LOSS OF POSTURE and EXTENSION flaws:

Cat & Camel:

Get on the ground on all fours.  Breathe in and drop your stomach to the floor so that it causes an arch in your back (camel), then breath out and lift your spine towards the ceiling so that there is a nice arch to your back (cat.)  Pause for 1-2 seconds between each position then repeat.  Repeat that 8-10 times once a day.

Kneeling Turns:

Grab a club and kneel on the ground with a towel underneath the down knee.  With both hands holding the club, raise your arms above your head and sit up tall in your spine.  Without moving your lower body rotate your torso from side to side.  Repeat 8-10 times, once per day.

These stretches will start you on your way to better swing mechanics and more importantly a better golf game!
